Putumayo Presents: Christmas around the World - 2003

Putumayo's first holiday collection, A Putumayo World Christmas, reminded us that the vast majority of people who celebrate the Nativity are more likely to have an incipient sunburn nipping at their noses than Jack Frost. Over the centuries, warm-weather cultures have developed a variety of lovely and highly individual holiday traditions. But musicians from Central and South America and the Caribbean also draw upon our shared European and post-colonial heritage, thus gracing familiar carols and seasonal pop songs with an enchanting tropical spin. Cha-chas, rumbas, and steel bands rock the house from Advent to El Dio de los Reyes (Festival of the Three Wise Men, or Epiphany) in countries where religious devotion often includes a cooking rhythm section and dancing goes to church. The set list includes a quartet of charming North American tracks, but the mood is predominantly south-of-the-border: festive, serene, exalted, danceable, and very beautiful. Christina Roden

Charlotte Church - Dream a Dream

Everybody's favorite precocious sprite of a soprano comes out with her third album in Dream a Dream. It's only been two years since Charlotte Church's smash debut, Voice of an Angel, but that's a big chunk of the Welsh singer's life span so far. This latest is basically a Christmas album, so full of festive cheer you'd never guess it was recorded in the summer. Even the glummest of moods will disappear when you hear Charlotte's infectious take on chestnuts such as "Winter Wonderland" and "Little Drummer Boy" (and having the London Symphony Orchestra as your backup band doesn't hurt either). And on top of that is a really special treat: the title song (borrowing an unforgettable classical melody) which blends Church's soaring vocals with the tender voice of young country prodigy Billy Gilman. --Sarah Chin

David Nevue - Adoration - 2007

David’s landmark tenth CD, Adoration, contains David's beautiful renditions of fifteen favorite hymns, including Be Still My Soul, How Great Thou Art and Amazing Grace.

With a piano style somewhere between Chopin and George Winston, David Nevue brings melody and heart back to instrumental music. Perhaps Heartsong Review said it best when they described his music as "hauntingly romantic." David's music introduces us to a wilderness of musical ideas which the listener becomes anxious to explore. Recorded at the famous Piano Haven studio in Seattle WA.

"My first impression of David Nevue's Adoration is that it is NOT what I had expected my reaction to be. Really. I had anticipated for his music to “blow me away.” Instead, I found myself TRANSFIXED. From the moment I heard the very first chords of the "Prelude" I was drawn in and became immersed in glorious musical notes! I marvel at how David masterfully gets the listener’s immediate attention in a whisper.
Each track is as beautiful as the one before and I remained in my seat utterly captivated for over four hours. His arrangements leave me spellbound! Listening to and thoroughly enjoying David's fantastic previous CDs (for hundreds of hours - at least) l did not expect to be surprised with his art - yet I am stunned!!
The audio in this recording is so pure that it allows David's incredible technique to shine and be heard crystal clear. It is so distinct that I can actually visualize as he touches and releases from each key to create such perfect tonal nuances that I am reminded that the piano is indeed a STRINGED instrument!
Although I am not familiar with most of the hymns, I am delighted to find striking similarities in their tone and structure to my native Ukrainian sacred music. Those unaware of the content of this CD might feel that David’s new album is made up of love songs because he performs each piece with such tenderness and earnest passion.
David succeeded in transferring his love and devotion towards each hymn straight to my heart. And, having initially described myself as being ”immersed” in the beauty of these pieces is not accurate. What I actually feel while listening to Adoration is EMBRACED… embraced by God’s divine love!
If I were asked to describe my impression of Adoration in one word? MASTERPIECE"

Jihad Akl Shiraz - A violin affair

Jihad Akl was born in Beirut / Lebanon in 1968.
He studies classical music for twelve years. He also worked as a player for the Lebanese Radio station. Moreover he has acted for a long period of time as a leader for the musical teams. On the other hand his dream was to be a Soloist player presenting artful shows singly enabling him make clear in a vivid manner what is inside him. He was nicknamed as the magician of violin by the chief editor of the Al Chabaka magazine Mr. George Ibrahim El Khoury. He set up private band for himself and went international. He performed in many Arabic recitals including at the Egyptian Dar El Opera and the ceremony of electing (Miss Europe) and the ceremony of the presidential palace at the occasion of convening the conference of the Arabic Summit in Lebanon

Rahim Alhaj - 2006

Rahim Alhaj was raised in Baghdad, Iraq, and began studying the oud when he was nine years old and gave solo concerts from age fourteen. He attended the prestigious Baghdad Conservatory of Fine Arts, (comparable to Julliard School of Music in the US), studying under Munir Bashir and Salim Abdul Kareem, whence he graduated from the six-year program with honors in 1990. He left Iraq the next year under pressure from Saddam Hussein’s government including imprisonment and torture due to artistic resistance to the regime. Rahim lived in Jordan and later in Syria until 2000, when he was granted political refugee status and moved to the US, where he resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico. An improviser and composer, he has performed in hundreds of solo concerts throughout the Near East, Europe and across North America. He performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC in June 2006 for this CD release tour. Rahim also teaches a Middle East Music History and Ensemble class at the University of New Mexico

CLOTAIRE K – Ya Saryan

One of the most exciting Arabic hip-hop acts to appear in recent years Clotaire K was born to Egyptian and Lebanese parents and bought up in the South of France amidst a backdrop of cultural diversity and racial tension. This exclusive track reflects his feelings of isolation as a second generation Arabic immigrant in France’s right wing heartland.

HAKIM – La Muchacha Turca (Simarik)

In the UK this track is better known as the number one hit single ‘Kiss Kiss’ by Neighbours star Holly Valance. The track was originally written by Turkey’s premier pop diva Sezen Aksu and became a huge hit for Tarkan – Turkey’s answer to George Michael. This version is recorded by Spanish based Arabic singer Hakim (not to be confused with the Egyptian shaabi superstar) and is sung in Spanish to a Latino rumba rhythm.

HAKIM – Talakik

Playfully nicknamed the Lion of Egypt, Hakim is one of the countries biggest shaabi (street pop) singing stars and one of the few Middle Eastern artists to have made an impact in the West. This hip swaying title track taken from his new album has been produced by acclaimed London based outfit Transglobal Underground and arranged by George Samir Hanna.

RACHID TAHA – Made In Medina

The King of roughneck Rai with a voice like a rattlesnake after a bottle of Jack Daniels Rachid Taha is Algeria’s answer to the Clash and Bruce Springsteen rolled into one. Made In Medina mixes Spanish guitar with a pulsating techno beat and a melody to die for. The lyrics refer to the isolation of living in big cities where disorientation and inhumanity are a fact of everyday life.

AMINA Featuring ZOHAR – Un Ange En Paix (An Angel of Peace)

Amina made her mark by coming equal first in the Eurovision Song Contest and becoming the first Arabic singer to represent France. Since then she has carved out a notable career as a singer and an actress (most recently in the critically acclaimed film ‘Inch Alla Dimanche’). With a style akin to the Gotan Project this UK exclusive pitches the laid back beats of London based producers Zohar with accordion and French chanson vocals given a Tunisian twist.

CELLOMAN – Chebba

Led by Cellist Ivan Hussey, Celloman was inspired by three years living in the Middle East and learning from a variety of traditional musicians. Originally penned by the great Algerian Rai artist Cheb Khaled this version of Chebba is a seven- minute opus of Middle Eastern percussion and driving string arrangements that has become a highlight of his live performances.

LATIF EL IDRISSI – Ya Rayah

Better known as one of Rachid Taha’s greatest hits this track was originally written by revered Algerian singer Dahmane El Harrachi (1926-1980). The lyrics sung in an Arabic/ Algerian dialect describe how the thought of returning home is ever present in the minds of first generation immigrants. This version matches Taha’s for it’s impassioned lament of homesickness and struggle.

SOUAD MASSI – Nekreh el Keld

Taken from her critically acclaimed album Raoui (or Storyteller), Nekreh el Keld (or ‘I hate this heart that still loves you’) is a story of lost love played to the sounds of the Mahgreb and mixed with Spanish and gypsy influences. Targeted by fundamentalist Islamic groups for promoting the independent image of young Algerian women Souad Massi fled to Paris where she has lived for the past three years creating her own distinct brand of folk, rock and shaabi.

GROOVE ALLA TURCA – Habibi

A boundary crossing project featuring acclaimed Turkish percussionist Burham Ocal and jazz-funk bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma this particular track features Natacha Atlas slinking to a James Brown groove and bathing in hot Turkish strings.

MAKALE – Salla

Who would have believed that Turkish hip-hop could exist in Switzerland? Rappers Casus and Cesaret grew up in Basel to Turkish immigrant parents and immersed themselves in a cocktail of old school hip-hop, electro, raga, dub, and traditional Arabic music. Salla is one of the strongest tracks on their debut album combining strong Turkish grooves with hard rap vocals and deft scratches.

AZIZA A – Kim Dedi (Who Said)

The self-confessed queen of Oriental hip-hop Aziza A was born in 1971 to a Turkish family living in Germany. Known as the first female Turkish hip-hopper she quickly expanded to being the first Turkish female presenter on German television and having her own radio show on Berlin’s Radio Multi Kulti. This track challenges people to think for themselves amidst a driving two-step vibe.

AISHA KANDISHA’S JARRING EFFECTS – Habibi Maja

Universally acknowledged as the originators of Arabic techno, this track taken from their fourth album features driving electronic rhythms combined with shaabi - the popular traditional Moroccan folk song style. Aisha Kandisha’s founding father Habib El Malak left the band to become a politician in Marrakech, but his influence remains intact on this track dedicated to spurned love.

AMIRA SAQATI – Tobiga’s Atlantic

The brainchild of Aisha Kandisha’s Cheb Youssef and Barbarity label boss Pat Jabber this futuristic track fuses beats with Moroccan Rai, Gnawa, Berber, and Egyptian Jeel to produce a startling digital roots melange.

MOMO – Dar

London has become a hotbed of Middle Eastern break beat culture in recent years and Momo (or Music Of Moroccan Origin) are one of the acts spearheading this exciting new scene. Led by ex-Joi percussionist Lahcen Lahbib, Momo are the sound of Moroccan youth culture educated on a mix of traditional and electronic rhythms. Dar is the sound of this plugged in hybrid advocating peace through conscious clubbing and cultural tolerance.

Evanthia Reboutsika - A Touch Of Spice - 2003

One of the best selling soundtracks of Greek discography is signed by Evanthia Reboutsika, one of the most significant composers of recent Greek music productions. At this soundtrack, Evanthia creates a fusion of the western musical expression and the rich eastern musical tradition. You can hear the piano together with the politiki lyra, ney together with classical guitar, bouzouki together with c.base.
The Symphonic Orchestra of the Bulgarian Radio, conducted by Boris Spassov, gives the sense of fulfillment that is needed in film music. Turkish singer Dilek Kots and Greek singer Natassa Theodoridou, color in a unique way the two songs of the soundtrack.
